3月25日 St. Paddy's Day @ The Blarney StoneDespite minimal complaints that we weren't "Irish" enough, a good timewas had by most on March 17, 2009 at the [amazing] traditional Irish buffet and party at the Holiday Inn, Blarney Stone Irish Pub. The band rocked out, mostly in green, and even had some assistance from Irishman, Paul Horgan who belted out a couple traditional homeland tunes. Here is the story that ran in the Zhuhai Daily News about the event...... PS. don't forget to come party with us this Friday at the Blarney!
By Betty Lin, Zhu Hai Daily.
THERE were 150 expatriates and Chinese tasting Irish food, drinking beer, and enjoying the live western music and new friendships as they celebrated St Patrick’s Day at the Blarney Stone Irish Pub at the Holiday Inn in Jida on Tuesday evening. Now that the celebration of St Patrick’s Day is themed around all things Irish and associated with the colour green, the hotel promoted the festival with a free beer for anyone wearing green. Many male customers wore green T-shirts and women green skirts. Two band members wore green shirts and two others wore green Bermuda shorts outside their pants. Most customers had a sticker -- a big, green shamrock, which is Ireland’s national emblem -- on their clothes. The Buhao Boys Band, which is composed of all western musicians, was founded two years ago. Australian Macca, who plays piano; Douglas Gillespie on drum and harmonica; Brian “Butters” Mason, who plays bass; and German Marcus Albrecht, the youngest talented lad in the band who plays guitar; and later Greger on lead guitar, entertained people with jazz, blues, rock 'n roll and other western music. The band plays in the pub on Friday night and also has gigs in different restaurants and bars and in Zhongshan and other Delta cities, according to Douglas, who is co-founder of the band. Since it reopened in September 2005, the pub featuring wooden furnishing and Irish pictures has become a haunt for westerners, Betty Wang, a PR staff member of the Holiday Inn, explained. A corned beef and cabbage buffet, a collection of typical Irish food, was served. A white cross made of bread projected with characters of St Patrick’s Day stood among the deserts. There were three things special in the evening, Holiday Inn Zhuhai Executive Chef Michel Seyve explained. First of all, the corned beef, cabbage, Irish stew, scones and other dishes were typical Irish food eaten at celebrations, especially on St Patrick’s Day. Secondly, the shamrock, the national symbol of Ireland, was stuck on each customer’s clothes. Lastly, the typical Irish cross with a circle around it was created specially for the festival. Paul J Horgan, Managing Director of China Global Investment Co Ltd located in Gongbei, wore a green tie and two green pictures -- one of St Patrick more than a thousand years ago, and the other of a person impersonating St Patrick in Dublin in 2008. He said he was happy that the hotel staff had made a lot of preparations for the food and decorations. An Irishman himself, Paul sang three Irish songs to show his affection to his homeland and garnered much applause from the audience. He was proud of his country’s Riverdance, an exciting typical Irish dance show displaying music, dancing and singing and at the same time the story of Ireland and its people, he said. The troupe travels around the world to stage the show and promote Irish culture, he added. Since a large number of Irish people immigrated to America, many Americans have an Irish connection. Even American President Obama has one, Paul noted. Ireland is one of the very few countries that has access to the White House on the National Day, Paul said, noting, “Today, our prime minister goes to the White House to present a bowl like this with a green shamrock -- a green flower -- to the president of America.” He pointed to an ashtray on the desk. “We do it every year,” he added. Paul later impressed the participants with a pleasant surprise. Knowing it would be Douglas and Helen’s one-year wedding anniversary next month (it was actually the next day!), Paul had ordered a cake from the hotel and presented it to the couple. All customers joined the celebration, turning St Patrick’s Day into a double celebration. “I’ve never expected this and it is very special for me,” said Douglas. 2月28日 HI Night 2 ~ BHB @ The BlarneyIt was FREEKIN' SWEET last night at the Blarney. The crowd wasn't quite as large as the Friday before, but then again, the Zhuhai Marathon brought in a lot of guests [the first week] to the hotel that weren't there yesterday. All said, the quality of the audience more than made up for the numbers. The music was hot and there were acually more people up dancing last night and grooving in their seats too.
A quick response to a message Mark sent to me on my [Zhuhai Nights] page, yes!, The Buhao Boys will be at the Blarney Stone Irish Pub every Friday night until further notice. Without going into great detail, you can also expect some surprizes soon, both with the band and with the venue. No more on that topic right now. All I will say is whether you are looking for a place to go for the evening, or a launching pad to get warmed up for another date, come out to The Blarney and enjoy!
And of course in closing, a big thanks to all who came out! 2月22日 Opening Night at the Blarney StoneThe whole band was really blown away by the tremendous support shown by so many. First of all, to all of you who came out, whether for a drink, to catch a set, or for the whole evening, we so appreciate you coming and hope you had a good time.
We want to express our appreciation to Mark Clulow, Zhuhai Nights, Rob Stegman, Zhuhai Nights, and Chris Cotrell (hope I spelled it right), Delta Bridges for their media support, and also for coming out in person to encourage us on our maiden performance at the Blarney. Finally, our deep gratitude to the Holiday Inn, and Michel Seyve, Executive Chef and Manager of the Blarney for providing a great venue to perform live music. And also to the wait and bar staff who ran all night taking care of the patrons... and the band! Cheers! We had a great time last night and are looking forward to Fridays to come. Keep your eyes on the events page coming up next month for St. Paddy's day. No details yet but Michel was saying he wants to put on something special on the 17th (I hope they have green beer!). OK, enough blathering on... see you next time! We will be at the Blarney Stone Irish Pub every Friday night from 9PM until we get thrown off the stage. Cheers............ 2月16日 ALL NEW . . .7月14日 Zhongshan with The Buhao BoysA whole weekend full of Party and Rock n' RollThe Buhao Boys live on the Alex's Bar stage! 6月6日 Natives, expats form charity bondNATIVES and expatriates together enjoyed live music by the Buhao Boy’s Band, beer and food, had fun and got involved supporting the Sichuan earthquake survivors at the Muslim Restaurant at Zhouzai on Jiuzhou Avenue, Jida, Friday night. A total of 6,000 RMB ($857), including $100 and HK$100 dollars, were collected on behalf of the municipal Charity Federation for the disaster areas.
Auction items included two wines and two champagnes from Rudy Lu, a returned overseas Chinese who operates a restaurant; the first broken drumstick of the Buhao Boy’s, DVDs and a DVD player bought by Douglas Gillespie.
Live music, food, beer and beverage feted the charity enthusiasts from different parts of the world. “It’s nothing to do with whether you’re a Chinese person or foreign person. It’s nothing to do with whether you live in China or live somewhere outside China. We talk here about a whole area that has been destroyed. It’s like a global thing and everybody should give support,” Chris said.
“Everyone is talking about foreigners and Chinese people, like separating them as though they’re two different species. But it’s not. We’re all human. Humans help each other,” Marcus, 21, said. “It doesn’t depend on how old you are or what your nationality is. It depends on how you were raised and how open-minded you are.” He illustrated how children in the kindergarten where he works offered to help the victims. When they heard there was not enough mother milk and infant formula in the disaster area, all the children went home and told their parents to do something. Then every child bought a milk powder box to the school and the teachers packed them up in huge boxes and sent them to Sichuan. “Even though they’re small, they got things they can do,” Marcus said. Randal Martin, an American who instructs at Jinlu (Golden Road) Kindergarten, expressed compassion for the victims, saying: “I feel sad. The people really need help.” He said he would do something to make himself feel somewhat relieved. “You have to do it because of you -- your passion,” he said. He also expressed his wish to adopt a baby. Yang Yuanyuan, who won the bidding for a DVD series titled Earth by offering $100, said: “It doesn’t matter how much it is worth. What matters is I can do something to help the victims in the earthquake-hit areas.” Kingsleg Phillips, an Australian who outbid for a DVD series with 600 yuan ($86), gave the DVD to a friend right away and put six hundred in the collection box. “It’s not about what it is. It’s about what the money does and if one can get help,” he said. He said that when he learned of the disaster in Sichuan Province, he didn’t know what he could do. Now he felt relieved that this money would go to help Chinese families to rebuild their lives, he noted.
David, 69, said the earthquake is one of the biggest tragedies of his life. “The poor people can’t take any more -- dams broke, more aftershocks,” he said. Learning about the catastrophe, David rushed to the China Red Cross Society Zhuhai Branch to donate money on May 15, becoming the first foreigner registered to make donations in Zhuhai. He noted that he was absolutely amazed when he saw Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao staying to see something about a rescuer at the site where there would have been aftershocks at anytime. “He is a terrific guy,” he acclaimed, adding: “I’m one of his fans.” A co-organizer of the charity event, Doug regretted that it’s a matter of fact that people do something together in a hard time. On the other hand, he felt it a good thing that something like this brings people together. “Unfortunately, there’s not much we can do,” he said. “We’re brothers and sisters, and our help is needed,” Doug said. “We can be lucky that we don’t have the hardships. We can enjoy the nice meal. We go home to a dry bed at night. We don’t have to worry that we don’t have a tent,” he continued. “I came to China, and China welcomed me. I have a job in China. I have a family in China. I have a life in China. Of course I’m connected to it. This is my community. Community is not where you work; community is where you are. So you have to take all of these things.” For victims in the disaster areas, Doug said: “We have no choice, because life is going to go on with them and for us, and this is going to get all better.” There is going to be a lot of emotional and personal loss that can never be replaced, but life will carry on and people are going to rebuild, he noted. Chen Ying, director of the Zhuhai Blue Angel Charity Community, noted that an increasing number of Chinese people are joining charity actions and that charity awareness has greatly improved over the years. “Charity deeds are rewarding and people get happiness in return,” he said. Reposted from Original by Betty Lin 6月1日 Sichuan benefitFirst of all, from the bottom of my heart, thank you to all who came in support of the cause and continue to show your care and concern for those affected in Sichuan.
The question was asked of me
"Why as a foreigner would you do something like this for the people in Sichuan [in a country not your own]?
My answer was quick and from the heart.
When I was living and working in Canada I gave a great deal of my time and effort to a couple of community organizations.
Now that I am living and working, and have a family in Zhuhai [China], THIS is where my community is.
As brothers and sisters we must help each other when we can, and when we must.
If that means giving time, money, or maybe just a simple prayer for hope it's a small gesture from us all that will give somebody a better outlook on tomorrow.
Cheers and thanks again Doug Gillespie (A Buhaoboy) 4月19日 Hellen and Doug's Buhao Boy Wedding PartyThe Buhao Boys drew a big crowd at the Muslin restaurant in Jida on April 18th
The occasion... Hellen and Doug celebrated their marriage
vows with their good friends, colleagues and family
A good time was had by all
Hellen and Doug want to thank everyone who came out for sharing their special day with them
3月25日 A Fond FarwellLast Sunday (March 23, 2008) the Buhao Boys helped some 50 or so guests to wish the Tempest family, Doc, Janine and Luka, bon voyage to their new adventure in North Vietnam. Although it was sad to say good-bye, it was great to spend that last bit of valuable time with them. The venue, The Cellar, set a comfortable tone for the event and we hope we can return there again (but under a happier circumstance).
If you were in attendance that day and took photos please forward them on to buhaoboys@live.com so I can add them to this blog entry.
3月2日 Third Rockin' Weekend at Live Bar!For three straight weekends The Buhao Boys have raised the spirits of happy patrons of Live Bar as they raised their glasses and bopped to the groove. Last night (Saturday March 1), although scheduled as a night off, they took to the stage to a full house. As a special treat for those who burned the midnight oil, the musical combo Mark and Tim (of Junk fame) took the stage and didn't miss a beat. The place was jumping!
Special thanks to a fan from Friday evening (Richard) for taking some cool snaps and sending them in. Keep your eyes peeled here and on Expat9 for The Buhao Boys schedule. There are going to be some cool surprizes.... thanks to all!
Love,
The Buhao Boys
